Ion hose instability
WebThe ion hose instability, which can seriously disrupt an IREB propagating in a focusing ion channel, is studied for the charge neutral Bennett-pinched beam. A rigid beam approximation predicts that the instability occurs in the long wavelength region, has a strong resonant growth, and has features of an absolute instability. WebIon-Hose Instability in Long Pulse Induction Accelerators George J. Caporaso and Jim. F. McCarrick Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, California 94550 USA Abstract The ion-hose (or fast-ion) instability sets limits on the allowable vacuum in a long-pulse, high current accelerator.

WebThe paper is organized as follows: in Section 2 we present linear theory predictions of the parallel fire hose, focussing in particular on the differences between proton and alpha contributions in driving the instability and the influence of a velocity drift between the species; in Section 3 we discuss the feedback of the instability on the plasma, deriving … WebThe ion-hose instability is considered to be a potential danger for long-pulse, high-current electron linear induction accelerators (LIAs). As is shown in this paper, it is also a concern for multipulse LIAs.
WebThe ion-hose instability has been identified as a key limiting factor in long-pulse electron induction linacs [1– 3]. This instability is well known, and has been studied in detail for electron beams in induction linacs operating in the ion-focusing regime (IFR).
